This Empire Period fauteil by Demay, Jean-Baptiste Bernard, born 1759 - died 4/2/1848, is important. Demay worked for Marie Antoinette and Napoleon I. This particular fauteuil a la Reine is stamped "Demay, Rue de Clery" beneath the front seat rail. It is partially damaged by upholstery nail holes.
Two chairs with the monogram of Marie Antoinette, stamped DEMAY, are in the Petit Trianon. His works are exhibited in the V&A in London, Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Musée Carnavalet and the Château de Versailles, and in the Wrightsman Collection, Metropolitan Museum,New York.
J.B.B.Demay (1759-1848) married the daughter of the menuisier Claude Sené II (Master 1769) and was granted his Masters ctedentials in 1784. He worked for the Garde Meuble Imperial, producing much high-quality furniture for Napoleon I. Prior to the Revolution he had made furniture for Marie Antoinette, other royalty and the aristocracy. He lived to see the Bourbon kings return to power and died at a then ancient 89 years.
