Roy Williams
The principal of Roy's Antiques Pty Ltd. He studied history and theory of fine arts with the incomparable Betty Churcher in Brisbane, while majoring in painting and drawing. His practical studies in ceramics, from digging the clay to building and firing the kiln, as well as modelling and casting silver etc., have provided an solid basis for the antiques trade. Betty Churcher's ability to encourage skills of critical examination, the ability to "see", provided the basis for the sensitivity to subtle nuances of style and construction that are essential to the antiqes profession.
Four years of Interior Design at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology included practical cabinetmaking, as well as the theory of architecture, interior design, and furniture design, ....and plastics technology etc., etc.
Of less obvious immediate relevance is his degree in comparative religion and literature( lots of Jane Austen). It has informed a consuming interst in the complex relationships between the decorative arts and trade, politics, technology and social history.
He moved shop to Fitzroy, Melbourne's historic oldest suburb, in 1982, and fully expects to die there of a heart attack at an advanced age, induced by the excitement of buying something really good, in the best antiques dealing tradition!
Roy's publications can be found in the Roy's Publictions section of this website. Martin Lloyd Martin Lloyd has retired from his position at Roy's Antiques to devote his time to writing. While he remains in regular contact, his encyclopaedic knowledge and ready wit are much missed in the day to day frenzy of antique dealing .
